100 Questions About Tuning Fork Level Switches-Part 3 | Liquid Applications 21–30

Can a Tuning Fork Level Switch Be Used for Water?
Yes. Tuning fork level switches work very well for clean water. The vibrating fork will change its vibration frequency once submerged in water, reliably triggering the switch signal for high or low level alarm.
Can It Be Used for Wastewater?
Yes, it can be applied to wastewater. Select the proper fork material (316L stainless steel or Hastelloy) to resist corrosion. Heavy sludge buildup on the fork may affect detection performance and needs regular cleaning.
Can It Detect Oil?
Yes. It can detect most types of oil, including lubricating oil, crude oil and vegetable oil, as long as the oil density meets the minimum requirement of the sensor.
Can It Detect Diesel and Fuel?
Yes. Tuning fork level switches are widely used for diesel and other fuel oils. Choose an explosion-proof version for hazardous fuel tank applications.
Can It Be Used for Chemical Liquids?
Yes, but material selection is critical. Match the fork and housing material with the chemical medium to avoid corrosion. Strongly corrosive liquids require special alloy or PTFE coating options.
Can It Be Used for Solvents?
Yes for many solvents. Check chemical compatibility first. Some aggressive solvents may attack plastic or seal materials, so PTFE seals and corrosion-resistant metal forks are often required.
Can It Be Used for High-Viscosity Liquids?
Limited use. High-viscosity fluids tend to stick to the fork surface, dampening vibration and causing false signals. It is not recommended for extremely sticky media.
Can It Detect Low-Density Liquids?
Yes, but there is a density threshold. If liquid density is too low, the liquid cannot sufficiently dampen fork vibration, and the switch will fail to detect immersion.
What Is the Minimum Liquid Density It Can Detect?
Most standard tuning fork level switches have a minimum detectable liquid density around 0.5 g/cm³. This value varies by manufacturer; low-density special models are available.
Can a Tuning Fork Level Switch Be Used for Foam?
Generally no. Foam contains lots of air and cannot provide enough damping to change fork vibration. The switch usually ignores foam and only responds to real liquid.
